Job Description

The crane operator performs a variety of functions in order to stage, load, unload and cut material. They have to be able to stock and maintain warehouse inventory in a safe and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

Crane Operation:

·        Inspects equipment, including overhead cranes and saws and completes inspection reports.

·        Operates overhead cranes in a safe and efficient manner and applies understanding of equipment so as to not overload the cranes.

·        Reads and understands paperwork so that orders are processed correctly.

Uses tape measure and micrometer.

·        Records all information correctly on paperwork to include material heat #, Location and any changes with original orders.

·        Uses a welding machine and saw to make cuts for customers as needed.

·        Uses banding equipment to band product.

·        Applies understanding of color codes to mark all material into a correct manner.

·        Applies understanding of where and how materials are located in the warehouse and restocks materials in the correct location as it arrives.

·        Polices Warehouse to ensure walking areas are clear and free of debris. To make sure all stacks are square and blocked correctly to prevent injury.

·        Must be keenly aware of safety and watch for safety of others.

Saw Operation:

Cuts steel using various size saws in a safe and efficient manner.

·        Inspect equipment for all safety guards and operational features.

Clean work area before and after shift.

Replenish all fluids, cutting oils and hydraulic oil as needed.

·        Must be able to read tape measures and micrometers and a square and have good math skills to ensure the cuts are done properly and to the correct length thus minimizing cutting time.

·        Must be forklift certified and have the ability to load cutting tables and restock material.

·        Must be able to build saw cutting into load building stacks and be able to use a torch and banding equipment.

·        Must be able to run cranes if running the saw in the warehouse.

·        Must know material by sight to identify it before cutting.

·        Must be able to identify paper work problems before proceeding to avoid miscut and costly mistakes.

·        Must be able to evaluate cutting time or meet the requirements expected by the company.

Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills Basic

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Forklift certification required if operating a lift.

Crane certification required as dictated by OSHA
