Introduction

Cementation Africa invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Rigger Specialist to be placed in Bentley Park. The successful candidate will report to the Engineering Manager. The company will provide remuneration and benefits relevant and appropriate to the position. Preference will be given to Historically Disadvantaged South African (HDSA) candidates. Applications only open to South African Citizens / Permanent Residents.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:

  • Effective team supervision to safely achieve production targets
  • Write professional method statements that effectively identifies, manages, and mitigates risks
  • Effective job planning, scheduling and execution of specialised rigging and rope work in terms of cost containment, legal regulations, procedures, quality standards and required resources (trained crew, time, equipment, material and tools)
  • Perform effective rope splicing for strong reliable connections vital for handling of heavy loads in mining operations
  • Safely install, inspect and maintain winder / hoist ropes, attachments, sheave wheels / conveyors and assist with shaft slinging
  • Safely maintain, repair, overhaul, erect / dismantle and construct engineering structures to standard
  • Plan and execute a rigging equipment maintenance and inspection schedule in line with OEM standards, regulations, company standards and safety protocols
  • Perform risk assessments prior to commencing work, in terms of conditions, material, equipment, safety standards, legal requirements and competence of the crew
  • Effective handover upon completion of a job (check that everything is in place, working as planned and ensure sign-off by all relevant parties prior to handover)
  • Timeously report equipment abuse and deficiencies
  • Self and team understand and comply with legal requirements, company standards, policies, procedures and safety protocols
  • Effective stakeholder engagement to ensure smooth workflows and repeat work
  • Effective self and team management in alignment with company values and leadership initiatives
  • Required to work away from home and cross border

Desired Experience & Qualification

Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Valid Rigger / Ropesman Trade Certificate
  • Supervisory Certificate (Planning, Leading, Organising and Control)
  • Valid EB Driver's License
  • Valid passport
  • Valid Medical Certificate of Fitness
  • Muscular strength to do rope splicing
  • Skilled at splicing and able to identify and use various types of ropes
  • Job planning and supervisory skills
  • Attention to detail and listening skills
  • Ability to lift and move loads using various methods and equipment
  • Ability to work at heights, focus and maintain concentration in physically stressful and demanding conditions
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, solve problems and make decisions within agreed parameters
  • Customer service orientation, with ability to liaise with clients and across functions
  • Good English written and verbal communication skills, able to negotiate new work and
    write method statements
Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:
  • Minimum 7 years of trade experience as a Rigger / Ropesman working with ropes and winders / hoists, preferably in a shaft in the mining environment
  • Experience as a Rigger Foreman or General Engineering Supervisor
  • Experience in planning and execution of specialised rigging and rope up work
  • Experience in writing of method statements and scheduling of related work
  • Experience working with rope reelers and tensioners
  • Experience conducting baseline risk assessments
  • Thorough understanding of heavy lifting, winders / hoists, rigging equipment and rope inspections, maintenance and legal requirements
  • Sound understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act
