Introduction

Purpose:  is to move heavy materials, machinery, or bulk goods safely across a facility's floor, using pendant, remote, or cab-controlled hoists. To ensure loads are correctly rigged, and inspect the equipment for safety, and coordinate movements with ground personnel.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manoeuvre overhead cranes to lift, transport, and position raw materials, equipment, or finished products efficiently.
  • Conduct rigorous daily and weekly inspections of the crane, hoists, wire ropes, and slings to detect wear, malfunctions, or safety hazards.
  • Secure loads using appropriate rigging equipment such as chains, slings, hooks, or magnets, ensuring weight limits are strictly respected.
  • Work closely with riggers, spotters, and floor supervisors, following established hand signals or radio commands.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks like lubrication and keep accurate equipment logbooks for compliance and auditing.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Valid, accredited crane operator certification (e.g., TETA certification in South Africa or relevant regulatory equivalent).
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) guidelines, load charts, and hand signal protocols.
  • Good awareness of surroundings, handeye coordination, and the ability to work at elevated heights and or in noisy, industrial environments.
  • Ability to calculate load weights, understand manufacturer load charts, and ensure capacities are not exceeded.
