Crane Operator

Introduction

Purpose of the Role

To safely and efficiently operate various types of cranes (mobile, tower, overhead, or crawler) for lifting, moving, and positioning loads on construction, mining, industrial, or logistics sites, in compliance with South African health, safety, and regulatory standards

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate cranes in accordance with manufacturer instructions, site safety protocols, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and relevant regulations.
  • Conduct pre-operational inspections and daily checks on crane equipment, rigging, and safety devices; report defects or malfunctions immediately.
  • Interpret load charts, lift plans, and signals from riggers or signal persons to execute safe and precise lifts.
  • Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting; maintain accurate logs of operations and inspections.
  • Ensure safe setup and positioning of cranes, including outriggers, mats, and ground conditions assessment.
  • Comply with all site-specific safety rules, permit-to-work systems, and company policies.
  • Assist with rigging, slinging, and securing loads as required.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and incident reporting.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

Education and Certification

  • Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF Level 4) 
  • Valid Crane Operator Certificate issued by a recognised training provider (e.g., CETA-accredited, Lifting Equipment Training, or similar).
  • Valid Medical Certificate of Fitness (as per OHSA and Driven Machinery Regulations) obtained within the last 12 months.
  • Valid Code EC (Code 14) driver’s licence with professional driving permit (PDP) – preferred for mobile crane roles.
  • Valid  Prdp (PDP)

 

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of proven experience operating the specific crane type relevant to the role

 

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of load charts, safe working loads (SWL), and crane stability.
  • Ability to interpret hand signals, radio communications, and lift plans.
  • Good spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for routine inspections and minor adjustments.
  • Clear verbal communication and ability to work under pressure.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to company and legislative requirements.
