We have an exciting opportunity for Operations Mobile Crane Operator. The purpose of this role is to operate a variety of mobile cranes (50-500t) in support of mining, construction, and engineering activities, ensuring compliance with operational, safety, and maintenance standards.

In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As our Mobile Crane Operator your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Safety. Health, and Environment

  • Adhere to all health and safety practices requirements and promote good housekeeping to ensure compliance and an environment where team members can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment
  • Active participation in safety initiatives, i.e. SLAM, HPH
  • Conduct the required safety interventions before undertaking any tasks
  • Ensure a clear working area and the legibility and visibility of safety signs. Attend to spillage material to prevent contamination and pollution; keep a record of actions taken.
  • Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.

Performance and Delivery

Crane Operations:

  • Operate mobile cranes to lift, move, and position heavy materials, machinery, and equipment.
  • Navigate the crane across the site, considering terrain, obstacles, and operational constraints.
  • Rig loads correctly to ensure stability and safety during lifting operations.
  • Lift, lower, and swing loads using the crane’s hoisting mechanisms in accordance with load-handling procedures.
  • Coordinate with spotters and ground crews using hand signals, radio, or other communication methods.
  • Assist in loading and unloading trucks and support site logistics as required.

Equipment and Load Handling:

  • Collaborate with the lifting team to coordinate safe and efficient load handling.
  • Move cranes into position based on load weight, capacity, and site conditions.
  • Transport and position materials and equipment as required for operational needs.

Equipment Maintenance and Validation:

  • Conduct pre-operational checks to ensure the crane is in proper working condition.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as lubrication and inspections.
  • Report maintenance requirements and equipment malfunctions promptly to supervisors.
  • Prepare equipment for maintenance during breakdowns or shutdowns to minimise production impacts.
  • Ensure operating conditions comply with supplier specifications and quality system requirements.
  • Report any non-conformances for corrective action. 

Assistance and Team Support:

  • Assist supervisors and co-workers within the area of competence.
  • Provide support in the absence of the responsible person.
  • Align assistance with KIO policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.

Housekeeping:

  • Clean equipment and machinery after use according to prescribed standards.
  • Perform cleaning activities beyond allocated areas when required.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of safety signs and equipment to ensure visibility and functionality.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of daily operations, including lift logs, equipment inspections, and incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and company documentation requirements.

This role is in the Engineering & Maintenance (E&M) department on a band J5.1 (B4/B5) reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / N3 Technical
  • Mobile Crane Licence(s)
  • Basic Rigging Certificate
  • Valid Dover Certificate
  • SA Drivers Licence, Code 14

Technical Knowledge

  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ hands-on experience operating mobile cranes, including high-capacity units up to 500 tonnes, preferably within mining or heavy industrial environments.
  • Proficient in conducting comprehensive pre-shift inspections, including checks on hydraulic systems, structural integrity, safety devices, and load-handling components.
  • Skilled in using standard hand signals and two-way radio communication for safe and efficient coordination during lifting operations.
  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of mobile crane operating procedures, including:
  • Load chart interpretation
  • Boom configuration and extension
  • Counterweight setup
  • Stability and ground pressure considerations
  • Emergency stop and override systems
  • Well-acquainted with the layout and operational zones of the assigned section, including:
  • Access routes and exclusion zones
  • Load staging areas
  • Environmental and terrain-specific risks
