Mobile Crane Operators are responsible for safely and efficiently operating truck-mounted mobile cranes to support foundation drilling, piling, and material handling activities on Hall Shoring & Foundations projects. They play a critical role in lifting and placing rebar cages, casing, and materials in coordination with drilling and piling crews.

 

Operators are expected to understand crane limitations, ground conditions, and lift requirements while maintaining strict adherence to safety, quality, and site procedures. This role requires strong situational awareness, precision control, and clear communication in high-risk, congested work environments.


Core Responsibilities:


  • Operate mobile cranes to perform lifting and placement of rebar cages, casing, steel, and materials in accordance with engineered lift plans and site requirements.
  • Set up cranes safely, including proper outrigger deployment, cribbing, and leveling based on ground conditions and load requirements.
  • Perform daily pre-operational inspections, lubrication, and maintenance checks; report any deficiencies immediately to the Foreman.
  • Interpret load charts, calculate lift capacities, and ensure all lifts are within safe operating limits.
  • Coordinate closely with Drill Rig Operators, Piling Rig Operators, Labourers, and Foremen during lifting operations.
  • Communicate with signal persons using approved hand signals and radio communication.
  • Maintain awareness of personnel, equipment, and site conditions during all lifting activities.
  • Verify rigging configurations, load security, and lift readiness prior to any hoisting activity.
  • Support drilling and piling operations by safely handling cages, casing, and tooling.
  • Monitor ground conditions and crane stability, particularly when working in excavations or near edges.
  • Ensure safe mobilization, setup, and demobilization of crane equipment.
  • Maintain housekeeping of crane area, access routes, and laydown zones.
  • Participate in daily hazard assessments, toolbox meetings, and lift planning discussions.
  • Suspend any lift or operation that poses risk to personnel, equipment, or the environment and report unsafe conditions immediately.

 

Technical Skills:


  • Proficient in operating truck-mounted mobile cranes in civil or foundation construction environments.
  • Strong understanding of crane load charts, lift planning, and safe working loads.
  • Experience performing lifts at varying radii and understanding chart reductions based on boom angle, configuration, and load radius.
  • Knowledge of rigging practices including slings, shackles, load balance, and center of gravity.
  • Understanding of ground bearing pressure, outrigger setup, and crane stability requirements.
  • Ability to assess lift requirements in relation to excavation edges, ground bearing conditions, and outrigger loading.
  • Familiar with lifting operations supporting drilling, piling, and concrete placement activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings, lift plans, and site layouts.
  • Competent in performing routine equipment inspections and identifying mechanical issues.
  • Awareness of proximity hazards including overhead utilities, excavation edges, and adjacent structures.
  • Knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and safe maintenance practices.

 

Interpersonal Skills:


  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with Foremen, Operators, and Labourers.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, precision, and attention to detail in lifting operations.
  • Maintains composure and sound judgment in high-risk or time-sensitive situations.
  • Supports teamwork through clear direction and collaboration during lifts.
  • Proactive in identifying hazards and contributing to safe, efficient operations.
  • Committed to maintaining a culture of safety, accountability, and quality.


Qualifications:


  • Years of experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years operating mobile cranes with experience on mid to large capacity cranes (50–100+ ton range).
  • Education: High School or Equivalent.
  • Certification Required: Valid certification through BC Crane Safety for mobile crane operation appropriate to a 90-ton (hydraulic 0–120 tonne class or equivalent) crane.
  • Considered an asset:
    • Red Seal Mobile Crane Operator
    • Ground Disturbance Level 2
    • Rigging
    • Fall Protection
    • MEWP
    • First Aid
    • Experience operating cranes in the 75–100 ton range.
  • Physical requirements
    • Physical fitness for high-intensity tasks.
    • Ability to climb on and off equipment and work in varying site conditions.
    • Lift up to 50 lbs.
    • This role includes tasks requiring respiratory protection. Employees must be clean-shaven and fit-tested for ½ or full non-powered respirators, as per Provincial OHS Regulations and Hall OHS Policy.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends as necessary to meet project deadlines.
