Dogman / Rigger – Construction & Steel Erection
Location: Dunedin and Christchurch

Position Summary
The Dogman / Rigger is responsible for the safe slinging, signaling, and directing of crane operations during lifting activities. This role is critical in steel structure and vertical building projects, ensuring loads are correctly rigged, secured, and guided into position safely and efficiently. This position is part of a long-term project that will run 4-5 years and will start in June/July.

 
Key Responsibilities
  • Select, inspect, and attach appropriate rigging equipment (slings, chains, shackles, lifting beams, etc.).
  • Safely sling and direct loads for lifting, including structural steel components such as beams, columns, and frames.
  • Ensure loads are properly balanced, secured, and stable before lifting.
  • Guide loads into position using taglines and controlled hand positioning.
  • Act as the primary signaler (dogman) to crane operators using standard hand signals and/or radio communication.
  • Coordinate closely with crane operators during lifting, slewing, and placement activities.
  • Maintain constant communication to ensure accurate and safe crane movements.
  • Assist with positioning and aligning steel components during installation.
  • Support vertical building construction processes, including high-rise steel erection.
  • Work with steel fixers and erection crews to ensure correct placement.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety requirements and site safety procedures.
  • Conduct pre-use inspections of rigging equipment and remove defective gear from service.
  • Ensure lifting operations comply with lift plans and load limits.
  • Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings and safety briefings.
  • Maintain rigging gear in good condition and ensure proper storage.
 
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Dogman / Rigging License or Tickets (Site Safe, Heights, EWP)
  • Proven experience in rigging for crane operations with precast steel and concrete slabs.
  • Experience working in structural steel erection or construction environments.
  • Experience with loads of 8-9 tons.
  • Strong understanding of lifting gear, load calculations, and rigging techniques.
  • Knowledge of crane signals and safe lifting practices.
  • Able to work 12-hour shifts and half a day on Saturday.
  • Housing in Christchurch and Dunedin is available.
