Crane Operator

Venture Dynamics is seeking a skilled Crane Operator to operate portal, mobile, and tower cranes supporting ship repair work in an active commercial shipyard. The Crane Operator sets up and runs cranes to lift, remove, reposition, and reinstall shipboard machinery, equipment, and structural components, working closely with rigging crews to execute safe, controlled lifts aboard vessels and on the pier. This role requires a current NCCCO or NCCER crane operator certification, including a TLL (telescopic boom, swing cab) designation. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand, with the potential for long-term placement or permanent hire with select clients.

Per diem may be available depending on contract requirements and travel distance.

Responsibilities

  • Operate portal, mobile, and tower cranes to lift, position, and move heavy equipment, materials, and shipboard components during ship repair operations.
  • Serve as the site's Crane Operator, inspecting the crane and work area before each lift to confirm safe setup and positioning.
  • Determine safe lift capacity based on load weight, crane specifications, and weather conditions, reading and interpreting load charts for each lift.
  • Plan, select, and position rigging equipment for machinery removal and installation, applying working load limits, sling angle deductions, and center-of-gravity principles.
  • Interpret hand and voice signals from signalpersons and ground crews throughout lifting operations.
  • Coordinate with riggers, deck crews, and production trades to plan and execute controlled lifts around vessels, dry docks, and shipyard work areas.
  • Perform daily crane inspections, lubrication, and routine maintenance, documenting inspection logs as required.
  • Apply safe crane and rigging practices at all times and participate in the site's Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) program.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience operating portal, mobile, or tower cranes in a shipyard or heavy industrial environment.
  • Current NCCCO or NCCER crane operator certification, including a TLL (telescopic boom, swing cab) designation.
  • Ability to read and interpret load charts and apply safe rigging and lifting practices.
  • Strong working knowledge of rigging principles including working load limits, sling angle deductions, and center-of-gravity calculations.
  • Ability to interpret hand and voice signals and communicate safely with riggers and ground crews during lift operations.
  • Must be able to obtain base access (DBIDS) as required by the military installation.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical.
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening per customer requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NCCCO Rigger Level I and Signalperson certification.
  • OSHA 10 Maritime certification.
  • Certification in additional crane categories, such as lattice boom crawler, boom truck, or articulating boom cranes.
  • Prior experience rigging and assisting trades aboard ships.
  • Class A CDL.

Additional Information

Exposure to industrial noise, weather conditions, and mechanical hazards is expected; respiratory protection may be required based on task or location. PPE is required in accordance with site safety policies. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs.
